Nicholas Sprenger

Nicholas Sprenger (born May 14, 1985 in Brisbane , Queensland ) is an Australian swimmer, he specializes in the middle freestyle distances .

At the beginning of his career, Sprenger trained in a training group with Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett . After he had finished third in the 2003 Australian Championships in the 200 m freestyle, he was nominated for the Australian national team for the 2003 World Cup . There he started in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, which won the gold medal.

A year later at the Olympic Games in Athens he won silver in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay together with Thorpe, Hackett and Michael Klim .

After Thorpe announced a break after the Olympics in 2005, Sprenger was number 2 over 200m in Australia behind Hackett. In the same year he had a minor car accident that disrupted his preparation for the World Cup . Despite these complications, Sprenger swam personal bests in both the 200m and 400m freestyle and finished fifth in the 200m. He also won bronze with the Australian 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

In 2006, Sprenger could not take part in national and international championships due to a persistent virus.

His cousin Christian Sprenger is also a swimmer in the Australian national team.
