Qin Kai ( Chinese  秦 凯 , Pinyin Qín Kǎi , born January 31, 1986 in Shaanxi ) is a Chinese diver . He starts in artificial jumping from the 1 m and 3 m board as well as in 3 m synchronized jumping. Between 2007 and 2015 he won seven gold medals at swimming world championships, including five times in a row with four different partners the competition in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board. At the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012 , he was also Olympic champion in this discipline.

With a height of 1.70 m, his competition weight is 65 kg.

biography

Qin Kai started gymnastics in Xi'an in 1990 as a child . Although he won a silver medal in jumping at the 1994 provincial championships, he turned to jumping at the age of eight. A year later he left home due to his sporting career. During this time, Qin was diagnosed with a disease of the heart muscle ( cardiomyopathy ) that caused him problems eating and sleeping.

In 2005, Qin made the leap into the Chinese national team after having won the individual competition from the 3-meter board and a second place from the tower at the Junior World Championships in 2001. As of 2006, he was the partner of Wang Feng, seven years his senior . The duo big success was the allotted three-meter springboard synchronized diving, these included from 2007 six wins in the World Series, two Grand Prix victories and the world title from Melbourne . On August 13th, 2008, Qin and Wang won the competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in their native Beijing .

After five second places in the 2008 season in Grand Prix and World Series competitions, Qin was also considered one of the possible medal candidates in the individual competition at the Games in Beijing and won the bronze medal when his compatriot He Chong won. Qin rose to the top of the world as an individual jumper in 2006 when he won the 3-meter board at the Italian Grand Prix and at the World Cup competition in Changshu , his home country. A year later, at the World Championships in Australia, he won both the synchronized and the individual competition from the 3 m board in front of the Canadian Alexandre Despatie and the Russian Dmitri Sautin . Qin counts the latter among his role models.

In July 2009, Qin, who was also known as "Iron Boy" due to his distinctive facial features, was able to build on earlier successes. At the World Swimming Championships in Rome, he won the competition from the 1 m board in front of his compatriot Zhang Xinhua and the Australian Matthew Mitcham . He also won synchronized jumping from the 3 m board with his partner Wang Feng. In 2011 he repeated this victory, winning gold in the 3-meter synchronized jumping in Shanghai , this time alongside Luo Yutong . In the individual from the 3-meter board, he missed a medal in fourth. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he also competed with Luo in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board. With 477.00 points they won the gold medal by a large margin. In the individual from the 3-meter board, Qin led the competition until the last jump before he was caught by the Russian Ilya Sakharov and had to make do with silver, ahead of his compatriot He Chong.

At the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona in 2013 , Qin only finished fifth in the individual competition from the 3-meter board when He Chong won. In synchronized jumping he won the title with He. At the 2015 World Cup in Kazan , Russia , Qin won the synchronized jumping title for the fifth time in a row from the 3-meter board, this time with Cao Yuan as a partner. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Qin could not build on earlier successes and together with Cao Yuan won the bronze medal in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board, behind the British Olympic champions Jack Laugher and Christopher Mears and the Americans Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman .

Qin Kai lives in Beijing and is trained by Hu Enyong. He is studying journalism at the Chinese People's University . His hobbies include Qin, who is considered shy in public, playing basketball and football . He's been in a relationship with the Chinese diver He Zi for several years , with whom he shares the coach. Qin caused a stir in the media at the 2016 Summer Olympics. During the award ceremony for the women from the 3-meter board, he proposed marriage to He, who had won the silver medal.
