Cao Yuan ( Chinese  曹 緣 , Pinyin Cáo Yuán , born February 7, 1995 in Beijing ) is a Chinese water diver who competes in art and high diving .

Cao made his breakthrough in the adult field in 2010. First he won his first national title from the 10-meter tower, a month later he started at the Asian Games in Guangzhou and won the gold medal in the individual tower competition. In the following two years, Cao was able to convince especially in the 10 m synchronized jumping. With his partner Zhang Yanquan , he won numerous competitions in the context of the FINA Diving Grand Prix and also the World Cup in Changzhou in 2010 and in London in 2012 . The couple was then nominated for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and won the gold medal in synchronized jumping from the 10-meter tower as the clear favorite.

Cao jumps from the tower a program of high difficulty. At the national championships in 2010 he was one of the first diver to perform a 2 ½ Auerbach pike with 3 screws with a difficulty level of 3.8. In synchronized jumping, the local press gave Cao and Zhang the nickname Dreamteam even before their Olympic victory .

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Cao and Qin Kai won the bronze medal in synchronized jumping from the 3-meter board, behind the British Olympic champions Jack Laugher and Christopher Mears and the Americans Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman . In jumping from 3 meters, he secured gold from the Briton Laugher and the German athlete Patrick Hausding .
