Gary Tobian
Gary Milburn Tobian (born August 14, 1935 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a retired American water diver who was Olympic jumping champion in 1960 .
While many other US divers moved to Michigan to train there, Michigan-born Tobian started for the Los Angeles Athletics Club and studied at the University of Southern California . He won from 1955 to 1960 six times in a row AAU -Meistertitel in springboard diving and also won twice in diving .
Tobian received his first international medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, when he won silver from the tower behind the Mexican Joaquín Capilla . In the extremely tight decision, the Mexican had a lead of 0.03 points over Tobian in the end.
At the Pan American Games in 1959, Tobian won the jumping competition. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , Tobian also won the competition from the 3-meter board. From the tower he came second again after 1956. He was behind Robert Webster, who was born in California and studied in Michigan .
In 1978 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
