Alexander Stalijewitsch Portnow ( Russian Александр Сталиевич Портнов * 17th September 1961 in Baku , Azerbaijan SSR ) is a former Soviet - Belarusian diver , who took in springboard diving. He took part in two Olympic Games and was Olympic champion in 1980 from the 3-meter board.

Portnow started diving at the age of three. He was initially trained by his father and started for the clubs Dynamo Minsk and Spartak Minsk . He took part in the Olympic Games in Moscow for the first time at the age of 18 and immediately celebrated his greatest sporting success from the 3-meter board by winning the gold medal. He was fortunate that he was allowed to repeat his fifth jump, which he did not succeed, because of annoying noises from the neighboring swimming stadium during the jump. So he ultimately won ahead of Carlos Girón and the favored Franco Cagnotto . They protested against the jury's decision to repeat the jump. The medal award was then postponed by one day and only carried out after the final decision in favor of Portnow. A year later he won another international title, at the European Championships in Split he was European champion on the 3-meter board. Another year later he was finally able to win a bronze medal at the World Championships in Guayaquil . Portnow missed the Olympic Games in 1984 due to the Olympic boycott of the Soviet team , but started again at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 . There he reached the final from the 3-meter board, but had to be content with tenth place. After the games, he ended his active career.

Between 1982 and 1988 Portnow won a total of four national titles.
