Robert Lynn "Bob" Clotworthy (born May 8, 1931 in Newark , New Jersey , † June 1, 2018 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American diver and swimming coach.
Career
As an athlete
Clotworthy was born in Newark and grew up in nearby Westfield . He started diving at the age of 10.
Clotworthy was able to achieve various successes in national competitions in his early career. He won 11 titles in competitions of the Big Ten , the NCAA and the AAU .
He won his first Olympic medal at the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki . In the competition from the 3-meter board, in which the Americans could win all medals, he came third behind David Browning and Miller Anderson and returned home with bronze.
In 1955 he even won two medals at the Pan American Games : only the Mexican Joaquín Capilla was stronger on the 10-meter board , while he won bronze on the 3-meter board behind that Mexican and his compatriot Arthur Coffey.
At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, Clotworthy crowned his career: he won gold from the 3-meter board in front of Donald Harper and Joaquín Capilla.
As a trainer
Clotworthy became a successful swimming coach after his playing days. He trained successfully at West Point (1955/56), Dartmouth (1958), Princeton (1958-70), Arizona State (1970/71) and Texas (1972-76). His athletes included Jed Graef , who took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics and won gold while at Princeton, and Ross Wales, who won bronze at the 1968 Games. At the end of his career, Clotworthy was active in Venezuela as a trainer of the Peace Corps.
Bob Clotworthy was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980.
Private
Clotworthy was married to Cynthia Gill, who was on the US swim team, until her death in 2012. They met at the Pan American Games in 1955 and married in 1958. The couple left behind 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
