David Browning
David Greig "Skippy" Browning Jr (born June 5, 1931 in Boston , † March 14, 1956 at Rantoul in Kansas) was an American water diver who was 1952 Olympic champion in jumping .
Browning graduated from the University of Texas and won four undergraduate championships. Between 1949 and 1954 he was six times US indoor champion and twice outdoor champion. At the Olympic Games in 1952 he won the title ahead of his compatriots Miller Anderson and Robert Clotworthy , the Mexican Joaquín Capilla was fourth best non-American. After his Olympic victory he tried to get an Olympic flag from the pole as a souvenir, but was caught and imprisoned for a short time; his coaches were allowed to pick him up from prison and escort him to the team quarters.
In April 1956, a fortnight before the scheduled start of training for the 1956 Olympic Games, Browning, a member of the US Navy, crashed his plane over Kansas. In 1975 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
