qualification

Qualification criteria

Each nation was allowed to have a maximum of two athletes in the individual competitions and one pair in the synchronous competitions, i.e. a total of 16 athletes. A total of up to 34 single starters or eight synchronous pairs were allowed per competition.

The following qualification criteria applied to both women and men: Quota places for the respective NOK were achieved in each of the four individual disciplines by the twelve finalists of the 2015 World Swimming Championships in Kazan , the five winners of the 2015 continental championships and up to 18 semi-finalists of the World Cup from 19 to February 24, 2016 in Rio. Possibly still free quota places, the number of which depended on the extent to which the athletes qualified by the World Championships, the Continental Championships and the World Cup overlapped, were awarded to those athletes who placed 19th in the World Cup.
