South Africa took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . It was the 19th participation in the Olympic Summer Games.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee nominated 137 athletes in 15 sports. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the 400 m runner Wayde van Niekerk , who became Olympic champion at the games in a world record time over the 400 m distance.
