Richard Murray (born January 4, 1989 ) is a South African duathlete and triathlete . He is a two-time junior duathlon world champion (2007, 2008), multiple African triathlon champion (2011, 2012), two-time Olympian (2012, 2016) and world champion in the short distance duathlon (2016).

Career

In 2007 Richard Murray became the junior duathlon world champion in Hungary at the age of 18 and in 2008 he was able to successfully defend this title.

In 2011 he won the African Championships and was able to repeat this success in March 2012.

In addition to Kate Roberts and Gillian Sanders , he qualified for a starting place at the Olympic Games in London in 2012, where he finished 17th.

As part of the ITU World Championship Series 2013 he finished fifth and in October he will start for the first time at the Cross Triathlon World Championship on Maui, where he finished twelfth.

In March 2015 he was third in the opening race in Abu Dhabi and he finished fourth in the 2015 World Championship series with a third place in the final race.

In June 2016 he became world champion in the short distance duathlon. Richard Murray competed for South Africa at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on August 18, where he finished 4th.
As part of the 2016 World Championship racing series, he finished fourth in the ninth and final race (Grand Final) in Mexico in September, placing him fifth in the annual ranking.

In March 2017, he won the three-day opening event of the new Super League Triathlon racing series initiated by Chris McCormack in Hamilton Island, Australia .

In the 2018 World Championship racing series, he finished third in Australia - in the last race of the season, the Grand Final - as the best South African in fourth place.
