Benny Vansteelant
Benny Vansteelant (born November 19, 1976 in Torhout in West Flanders ; † September 14, 2007 in Roeselare ) was a Belgian duathlete , multiple duathlon European champion (1999, 2001–2003, 2006, 2007) and duathlon world champion on the short ( 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004) and long distance (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006).
Career
European champion duathlon short distance 1999
Between 1997 and 2007 he won the duathlon world title nine times and was eight times European champion in the short and middle distance.

In April 2007 Benny Vansteelant won the European Duathlon Middle Distance title for the third time (15 km running, 60 km cycling and 7.5 km running). In June in Edinburgh he won the title of European Duathlon Champion on the short distance for the fifth time (10 km run, 40 km bike ride and 5 km run).
Fatal traffic accident in 2007
On September 8, 2007 Benny Vansteelant was hit by a car and seriously injured while training in Hooglede . After an operation, Vansteelant seemed to be out of danger, but died six days later at the Roeselare hospital at the age of 30 as a result of the accident.
The " Benny Vansteelant Powerman Duathlon Zeitz " was named after him. It was supposed to take place in Germany for the first time in 2014 and again in June 2015, but was canceled after disputes between the city and the association.
Private
His brother Joerie, who is six years his junior , has also been one of the world's top duathlons for many years.
