Newcastle is an Australian port city in the state of New South Wales . It is located about 160 km north of Sydney , at the mouth of the Hunter River . The city has about 320,000 inhabitants.
The first attempt by the British to settle in what is now the urban area in 1798 failed. However, a port was needed to export the coal , which was mined in large quantities in the region. In 1804, the area was therefore repopulated under the name King's Town , but later renamed Newcastle.
On June 8, 1942, a Japanese submarine fired some grenades at Newcastle, but no people were harmed and only minor property damage occurred.
Newcastle has a large freight port where the products of the steel industry in the region are shipped. Newcastle also has a small airport and a railway line on the main Sydney - Brisbane route . Furthermore, Newcastle is connected to Sydney via a four-lane motorway.
The city of Newcastle is spread over several local administrative areas : Newcastle City , which has its administrative headquarters in Newcastle city center, Lake Macquarie City , Cessnock City , Maitland City and Port Stephens Council .
A tram has been running in Newcastle since February 2019 , connecting the station, which has been moved to the outside, with the city center.
