Coordinates: 32 ° 44 ′  S , 151 ° 57 ′  E Port Stephens is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 858.4 km² and has about 69,600 inhabitants.

Port Stephens is located on the east coast of the state 200 km northeast of the metropolis of Sydney . The area includes 74 hamlets and towns, including Anna Bay, Balickera, Boat Harbor, Bob's Farm , Brandy Hill, Butterwick, Campvale, Corlette, Duns Creek, Eagleton, East Seaham, Fern Bay, Ferodale, Fingal Bay, Fishermans Bay, Fullerton Cove , Heatherbrae, Hinton, Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula, Medowie, Nelson Bay, Nelsons Plains, One Mile, Osterley, Oyster Cove, Raymond Terrace, Salamander Bay, Salt Ash, Seaham, Shoal Bay, Soldiers Point, Swan Bay, Tanilba Bay, Taylors Beach, Tomago, Twelve Mile Creek, Wallalong and Williamtown as well as parts of Glen Oak, Karuah and Woodville. The council is headquartered in the town of Raymond Terrace on the western edge of the LGA, home to around 13,300 residents.

The Port Stephens Council has twelve members elected by the residents of the three wards (three each from the Central, East and West Ward). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
