Coordinates: 32 ° 59 '  S , 151 ° 21'  O Cessnock City is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 1,965.2 km² and has about 55,600 inhabitants.

Cessnock is located in the east of the state in the Hunter region about 150 km north of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 83 hamlets and hamlets, including Abermain, Bellbird, Cessnock , Ellalong, Kearsley, Kitchener, Kurri Kurri , Millfield, Mulbring, Pelaw Main, Weston, Wollombi and parts of Branxton and Greta. The City Council is located in Cessnock in the northeast half of the LGA, where about 22,000 people live.

The Cessnock City Council has 13 members who are elected by LGA residents. Three members each come from the four wards A, B, C and D, the chairman and mayor are also elected by all residents of the LGA. The four electoral districts are determined independently of the districts.
