history

Opening of Kurri Kurri High School (1956)

In 1886, geologist Edgeworth David discovered the South Maitland Coalfield, a large coal deposit in the region. For the purpose of coal mining, a railway line was built and the town of Kurri Kurri was laid out in 1902, with the first property auction taking place in 1903.

Between the 1930s and 1960s, the city's population declined. In 1966, Kurri Kurri was merged with other places to form the Local Government Area Cessnock City.
