Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is a region in New South Wales , Australia , along the Hunter River which flows into the Pacific Ocean at Newcastle . It covers an area that begins about 120 km north of Sydney and extends about 180 km north.

The largest city in the region is Newcastle, followed by Maitland , Port Stephens , Singleton , Cessnock and Muswellbrook . There are around 700,000 inhabitants here in total.

economy

Viticulture is economically important ; The Hunter Valley is one of the most important growing areas in Australia, along with the Barossa Valley , mainly because of the Sémillon . In addition, a visit to the more than 100 wine cellars is a tourist attraction that attracts 2.5 million people annually, mostly weekend visitors from nearby Sydney.

The Hope Estate Winery is one of the region's significant vineyards. In summer the area is also an event space for concerts. Internationally successful artists such as Eric Clapton , Elton John and Rod Stewart have performed here .

In addition, coal mining , energy generation from it and cattle breeding are important for the region.
