Singleton is one of the oldest settlements in the Hunter Valley . It has 13,214 residents and is located in the Singleton Shire Council administrative district .

A settlement was established here in 1820, which was declared a city 16 years later. It is named after Benjamin Singleton, owner of the first inn in the area.

Singleton is now a market center and industrial town in a fertile agricultural area that produces milk, meat and vegetables. A major contribution to the city's economy is made by its surrounding coal mines, whose production u. a. used by the nearby Bayswater coal-fired power station.

The old courthouse and prison now contain a historical museum.
