Muswellbrook

Muswellbrook is a city in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is the capital of the Muswellbrook Shire Local Government Area . The name is a corruption of the term Muscle Brook (Engl .: Muscle Brook ). However, there is a dispute about the origin and the spelling of the name. The Mussel Creek (dt .: Shell Bach) - Today Muscle Creek - was first named by a group of surveyors who at the beginning of the 19th century in the small stream shells found when they pitched their tents on its banks. The current spelling of Muswellbrook is said to be derived from that of the Muswell Hill area in London .

The city is a middle center in the upper Hunter Valley , about 150 miles north of Sydney . The first European explored the region in 1819; it was Chief Constable John Howe . In 1833 the settlement was declared a city. The last census in 2016 determined a population of 12,075.

The area was particularly known for coal mining and horse breeding . South of the city are two coal-fired power plants, Liddell and Bayswater . They were created in 1973 and 1980 and offer around 500 jobs for the region.

traffic

Muswellbrook is located at the intersection of two major railway lines, the Main North and the Merriwa , part of the overland route to Gulgong . This represented an important traffic junction and served a number of branch lines for coal mining, which were connected to the line at a short distance from the station.

Muswellbrook station is served by CityRail , CountryLink , national and local bus routes.

The New England Highway currently runs through the city. A route for a bypass was already selected in 2006, but the German government stopped the project in August 2008. The Muswellbrook – Denman road connects the city with the Golden Highway .
