history
The battle for Vauquois
Mount Vauquois was a strategic location: it allows a view of Verdun and Sainte-Menehould . From here the artillery fire could be directed against enemy positions. It was therefore contested.
Both sides heard the other side's underground digs. In this mine war the aim was to detonate the explosive charge in front of the enemy. The mountain had to endure 536 explosions. The village was so wiped out that not even the remains of a cellar could be seen.
The area was full of ammunition, war material and corpses. After the war, the residents were therefore refused entry.
The settlement was rebuilt at the foot of the southern slope.
