Varennes-en-Argonne is a French commune with 655 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Verdun and the canton of Clermont-en-Argonne (until 2015: canton of Varennes-en-Argonne ).

geography

Varennes-en-Argonne lies on the river Aire at an average altitude of 195 m. The municipality covers 11.81 km². The municipality is crossed by the Aire, which has its source in the south of Meuse and flows into the Aisne at Senuc. Varennes is bounded to the west by the Argonne Forest, on the border of the Ardennes and Marne departments.

The neighboring municipalities are: Montblainville (north-west), Charpentry (north), Cheppy (east), Boureuilles (south) and Vienne-le-Château (south-west, in the Marne).

history

After Louis XVI. was recognized with his family the day before during his attempt to escape into exile, he was stopped in Varennes on June 21, 1791 and forced to return to Paris. A plaque on the clock tower Tour Louis XVI reminds of this.

Varennes was completely destroyed during the First World War, but then rebuilt. The Pennsylvania Memorial, a memorial to Pennsylvania volunteers during World War I, was erected in Varennes during the interwar years.
