history

War memorial

Cumières-le-Mort-Homme is one of the nine villages in the Meuse department that were completely destroyed in the First World War during the Battle of Verdun and that were not rebuilt. After the hostilities ceased, it was decided to preserve the parish, which was declared a "village fallen for France" in memory of the events there. Reasons for the resettlement were also the pollution of the soil with duds, remnants of poison gas, other war material and of course the unburied dead. Nowadays the commune is administered by a three-person council: the three people are appointed by the head of the département (the prefect). Cumières-le-Mort-Homme is located away from the other destroyed communities northwest of Verdun on the left side of the Meuse on the D 123 road.

The nine villages destroyed are Beaumont , Bezonvaux , Cumières, Douaumont , Fleury , Haumont , Louvemont , Ornes and Vaux .
