Ancemont is a French commune with 551 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the canton of Dieue-sur-Meuse (until 2015 canton of Souilly ) and is the seat of the municipality association Meuse-Voie Sacrée .

geography

Ancemont is located on the left bank of the Meuse , at the exit of the Billonneau valley basin at an average altitude of 265 meters above sea ​​level , ten kilometers southeast of Verdun , the capital of the arrondissement . The village is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Dugny-sur-Meuse , Les Monthairons and Dieue-sur-Meuse . The municipality has an area of ​​13.3 square kilometers.

history

In the Middle Ages the town was called Mont and was under the Duchy of Bar and the Prévoté of Souilly . In the 17th century, the village of Ance was destroyed by Swedish troops and the residents moved to Mont , which was then called Ancemont. In the Ancien Régime there were three fiefdoms in the village.

In 1793 Ancemont received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

Culture and sights

The church La décollation de Saint Jean Baptiste ( Eng : the beheading of John the Baptist ) was built in 1855 in neo-Gothic style on the foundations of a church from 1686. In the church there was a statue of St. 15th century Mary Magdalene sold by the Ancemont parish priest in 1906. It was bought by the Louvre in 1922 and is now located in room 13 of the Richelieu wing.

La Bessière Castle dates from the 18th century. The main rectangular house is flanked by two square towers. Above the entrance door is a relief with the coat of arms of the La Bessière family. The castle is privately owned and is used as a hostel with two guest rooms .

economy

Forestry and wood technology are important branches of industry in Ancemont . A sawmill was built in 1860 . Two furniture stores , Anthéa and Sarap, were established in the 1990s .

In the municipality, there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Brie de Meaux and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for Mirabelles (Mirabelles de Lorraine) and Bergamote de Nancy (clear, amber-colored candies made from sugar and essential oil from bergamot ).
