As wood technology or wood technology refers to a wide variety of techniques and manufacturing processes for the material timber in intermediate products or final products to convert. The production of semi-finished goods such as sawn timber and wood-based materials is referred to as wood processing . The processing to the end product is called wood processing .

Wood technology also includes the combination of wood with other materials and building materials , such as B. in the important sub-areas of furniture construction , interior construction and wood construction .

The machines necessary for woodworking and wood processing, such as B. saws , drills , planes are called wood technology.

There are also professions such as B. the wood technician , and courses that have the application or development of wood technology to the content.

Wood technology can be divided into two areas:

Woodworking

Woodworking is the first step or steps in woodworking that do not yet lead to the end product. Logs are often used to cut lumber in sawmills , e.g. B. to produce beams , boards and strips. Wood-based materials can be manufactured from these intermediate products or from trunk wood or often from inferior wood qualities. A distinction is made between solid wood, wood chipboard , wood fiber and composite materials .

Wood processing

Wood processing is the further processing of wood processing products into the end product. This includes B. furniture construction, interior construction and wood construction.

Initial and continuing education

Numerous professions from a wide variety of industries are assigned to wood technology, such as B. carpenter / joiner , carpenter , turner , wheelwright , cooper , wooden instrument maker (e.g. violin maker ) and others. Some of these professions or trades are no longer or barely represented in training. In the handicrafts or in the wood industry , the master craftsman training usually follows as the next level.

There are also some training courses in the field of vocational schools (e.g. the vocational college in North Rhine-Westphalia), in which one can acquire the technical college entrance qualification and the general university entrance qualification with a focus on wood technology. Here you can also find the technical schools with the degree of state-certified technician specializing in wood technology ( wood technician ).

Technical schools train state-certified wood technicians , these are between the master's degree and the engineer.

Vocational academies , technical colleges , technical colleges and universities offer entry into engineering, teaching and science careers.

Apprenticeship in Austria

The modular apprenticeship in wood technology has replaced the previous apprenticeship in wood and saw technology since May 1, 2009. The modular apprenticeship in wood technology has a duration of 3, 3.5 or 4 years - depending on the choice of one or more main or special modules - and takes place in the sense of a dual training. A two-year training in the basic module wood technology and a one-year training in one of the following main modules is mandatory:

  • Precast production
  • Material production
  • Sawing technology

An additional main module can be selected to further deepen the training. In combination with the main modules of precast production or material production, a six-month special module “Design and Construction” can also be agreed (not in combination with the main module sawing technology). Duration of training:

  • 3 years: basic module + one main module
  • 3.5 years: basic module + one main module + special module
  • 4 years: basic module + two main modules
