Les Éparges is a French commune with 67 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the canton of Étain (until 2015: canton of Fresnes-en-Woëvre ) in the arrondissement of Verdun .
geography
The municipality is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Verdun on the western edge of the Woëvre landscape in the Lorraine Regional Nature Park . The municipality is traversed by the Longeau river, which drains over the Yron and the Orne into the Moselle and over the Rhine into the North Sea. Neighboring municipalities are Saint-Remy-la-Calonne in the south, Combres-sous-les-Côtes in the east, Herbeuville in the southeast, Vaux-lès-Palameix in the southwest, Mouilly in the west and Bonzée in the north.
history
Heavy fighting between German and French troops took place in the area of Les Éparges in 1914 and 1915, resulting in many victims. For this reason there are several monuments as well as two smaller military cemeteries in the municipality.

- National war cemetery with 203 French victims of the First World War, of whom only 86 could be identified.
- Nécropole nationale du Trottoir : 2960 soldiers are buried in an area of 8355 m², 2108 in individual graves, 852 in an ossuary .

Awards
The municipality was awarded the Croix de guerre 1914–1918 on March 15, 1921 .
The inscription "LES EPARGES 1915" appears as an honorable mention on the flags of the units that fought here during the Battle of Éparques.
