Beaufort-en-Argonne is located in northern France on the Wiseppe tributary of the Meuse in the Argonne countryside in the extreme northwest of Lorraine on the western edge of the Meuse department, 82 kilometers northeast of Reims , about 40 kilometers northwest of Verdun , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement , 28 kilometers southeast of Sedan and 5.6 kilometers west of Stenay , the capital of the canton and the municipal association Pays de Stenay at an average altitude of 210 meters above sea ​​level . Beaufort was first mentioned in 1188 as Bellofortis .
