It belongs to the arrondissement of Verdun and is part of the canton of Montmédy (until 2015: canton of Damvillers ). The inhabitants are called Merlots .

Merles-sur-Loison is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Dombras in the north and west, Grand-Failly in the north and north-east, Saint-Laurent-sur-Othain in the north-east, Villers-lès-Mangiennes in the east and south-east, Romagne-sous-les- Côtes in the south and south-east and Damvillers in the south-west.
