Martincourt-sur-Meuse is a French commune with 66 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Verdun and the Pays de Stenay municipal association founded in 1999 .
geography
The municipality of Martincourt-sur-Meuse is located on the Meuse , about 27 kilometers southeast of Sedan and about 15 kilometers southwest of the border with Belgium . A section of the Meuse Canal , which branches off the Maas in Stenay, five kilometers to the south, runs parallel to the Maas through the municipality to the east. It significantly shortens the route for ships compared to the Meuse, which has numerous bends in the river. The Maas bridge is mainly used to manage the pastures on the left of the Meuse.
The municipality of Martincourt in the far north-west of Lorraine extends from the floodplains on both sides of the Meuse to the heights of the plateau between the valleys of the Maas and Chiers rivers . The higher elevations in the north-east and some slopes are covered by forests ( le Petit Pèlerin ), around the village of Martincourt and on the Meuse there is arable land and pasture land.
Neighboring communities of Martincourt-sur-Meuse are Inor in the north, Olizy-sur-Chiers in the northeast, Stenay in the south, Cesse in the southwest and Luzy-Saint-Martin in the west.
history
Viticulture had a long tradition in Martincourt. In 1831 the vineyards on the slopes of the side valleys of the Meuse were 27 hectares. It was cultivated among other things Pinot Noir , after 1850 black Riesling . The phylloxera crisis between 1865 and 1885 led to great devastation, and the First World War finally led to the abandonment of the vineyards in the entire Maas region.
The church in Martincourt, built in 1771, never had its own pastor, and baptisms and weddings took place in the neighboring Cerisy Hermitage, which today belongs to Stenay .
While the village was largely spared during the First World War, it was completely destroyed at the beginning of the Second World War - Martincourt was directly behind the Maginot Line . The bridge over the Maas was built in 1904. It was destroyed by French engineers in 1914 to make it difficult for German troops to cross the river. A new bridge was built in 1922, which was destroyed again at the beginning of the Second World War. In 1950 the village was rebuilt after the residents refused to merge with the municipality of Inor, two kilometers to the north. In the 1950s, a new temporary bridge was built over the Maas, a temporary structure that is still in service today.

The Church of the Finding of the Cross in Martincourt ( Église de l'Invention-de-la-Sainte-Croix ) was built in 1771. After it was destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1950, with alterations between 1953 and 1956. With the exception of a statue of Christ from the 18th century, the interior is from the post-war period. The public wash house ( Lavoir ) from 1865 is the only structure in Martincourt that survived the destruction of 1940 largely unscathed.
