Avocourt is a northern French municipality with 108 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the canton of Clermont-en-Argonne (until 2015: canton of Varennes-en-Argonne ) and the municipality of Montfaucon Varennes-en-Argonne .
geography
Avocourt is located on the Buante , 81 kilometers east of Reims and 18 kilometers northwest of Verdun , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement of the same name . Neighboring municipalities of Avocourt are Montfaucon-d'Argonne in the north, Malancourt in the northeast, Esnes-en-Argonne in the east, Montzéville in the southeast, Aubréville in the south, Vauquois in the west and Cheppy and Véry in the northwest. The municipality covers 1466 hectares, the mean height is 249 meters above sea level , the Mairie stands at an altitude of 227 meters.
Avocourt is assigned to a type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger ) climate zone : warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.
history
In 1793 Avocourt received the status of a municipality and in 1801 through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) the right to local self-government .
The 24th battalion de chasseurs alpins fought in 1914 in the First World War (1914-1918) at Avocourt. In 1915, in the Battle of Verdun in 1916 and also in 1917, Avocourt and the hill "Höhe 304" behind it were hotly contested. The hill was conquered several times by the various warring parties. Today there is a war memorial there . In September 1918, Avocourt was captured by US troops at the start of their offensive in the Argonne .

One of the local attractions is a French military cemetery .
In 1750 a new church was built on the foundations of an older building. This church was destroyed in 1916 in the First World War. In 1926 a new church was built. Their patron saint is Saint Blaise of Sebaste († around 316). To the left of the entrance there is a room dedicated to the memory of those who died in the First World War. The two windows of the room were made by George Janin. Avocourt belongs to the Roman Catholic community of Varennes-en-Argonne , which is part of the parish of Saint Baldéric d'Argonne in the diocese of Verdun .
Economy and Infrastructure

Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) apply to mirabelles (Mirabelles de Lorraine) , poultry ( Volailles de la Champagne ) and bergamote de Nancy , clear, amber-colored candies made from sugar and essential oil from bergamot in the municipality .
