Laneuville-sur-Meuse is a French commune with 436 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Verdun and the local authority Pays de Stenay .

geography

Laneuville-sur-Meuse is located at an altitude of 168 m above sea level, 38 kilometers southeast of Sedan and 48 kilometers northwest of Verdun in the far north-west of Lorraine.

The village extends on the eastern edge of the Maas valley, which is about two kilometers wide , on both sides of the village stream Ruisseau de la Lieuse . The eastern boundary of the municipality is formed in part by the Wiseppe , a small river that flows into the Meuse at Laneuville. In this respect, the municipality does not reach the Meuse, although the municipality name uses the suffix -sur-Meuse ( on the Maas ). The strip between Laneuville and the left bank of the Meuse with the former train station and a paper mill belongs to the small town of Stenay , whose core is on the right side of the Meuse.

The 22.82 km² municipal area borders the Ardennes department in the west and includes large parts of the Forêt de Dieulet , which leads from the Meuse valley into the Argonne landscape . In addition to the Forêt de Dieulet , the forest areas Bois de Laneuville and parts of the Bois de la Haie in the south as well as parts of the Forêt de Jaulnay in the north belong to the municipality, so that a forest share of almost 80% (1,800 ha) results in the total area of the municipality .

Neighboring municipalities of Laneuville-sur-Meuse are Luzy-Saint-Martin and Cesse in the north, Stenay in the east, Wiseppe in the south, Beauclair in the south-west, Beaufort-en-Argonne and Belval-Bois-les-Dames in the west and Beaumont-en- Argonne , Létanne and Pouilly-sur-Meuse in the north-west.

history

Laneuville was created as a suburb of Stenay ( la Ville neuve devant Stenay / the new city opposite Stenay ) in 1244. The community's abundance of forests has often led to disputes over the use of the area by residents, which were not settled until the 19th century.

Already in the 18th century there was a brewery and a malt house in Laneuville. Beer brewing ceased around 1850. The brewery from 1830 is now the mayor's house ( Mairie ). A soap factory existed in Laneuville until the First World War. Industrial activities shifted to the neighboring town of Stenay in the 20th century .

Despite the destruction in the First and Second World Wars (a bayonet-shaped memorial erected in 1966 commemorating the fighting in May and June 1940), some buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries have survived, including the Saint-Nicolas church.
