Mairie Beaumont-en-Argonne

Beaumont-en-Argonne is a French commune in the department of Ardennes region Grand Est . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Sedan and to the Portes du Luxembourg municipal association founded in 1994 .

geography

The municipality of Beaumont-en-Argonne with 430 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) is located in the north of France, about 25 kilometers from the Belgian border. The nearest major cities are Sedan (25 km) and Charleville-Mézières (45 km away).

The 31 square kilometer municipality of Beaumont in the east of the Ardennes department includes a section of the Argonne , a landscape between the Aisne and the Meuse . The place itself is located in a valley at about 230 meters above sea level. The valley is shaped by the small brook Ruisseau de Beaumont , which rises west of the town center. It flows into the Meuse after just three kilometers. The Ruisseau la Wame , also a tributary of the Meuse, forms the southwestern municipal boundary - at the same time the border with the former Lorraine region . To the north and south of the valley there is arable land in a gently undulating landscape. The west and south of the community area is dominated by forest. The Bois de Sommauthe forest is part of the large contiguous forest area Forêt de Belval .

Neighboring municipalities of Beaumont are Yoncq and Mouzon in the north, Létanne in the east, Laneuveville-sur-Meuse in the south-east, Belval-Bois-des-Dames in the south, Vaux-en-Dieulet , Sommauthe and Saint-Pierremont in the south-west, and La Berlière in the west as well as La Besace in the northwest.

history

By the Archbishop of Reims , Wilhelm von Blois , Beaumont-en-Argonne was raised to resettlement in 1182 and received a right ( Loi de Beaumont-en-Argonne ) in 52 articles.

Beaumont and the immediate vicinity were the scene of bitter skirmishes in the Franco-German War and in World War I (including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive ). The name of the parish stands for the battle at Beaumont on August 30, 1870.

It was not until 1928 that the municipality was given the suffix -en-Argonne in order to be able to differentiate itself better from other municipalities called Beaumont .

Attractions

The entire local ensemble is reminiscent of a small fortified town. The streets were laid out like a chessboard in an oval of 400 × 500 meters, which used to be enclosed by walls, with the church and the mayor's building ( Mairie ) in the middle on the main square .

Four houses on the Place Principale are classified as Monument historique . These are house forms with arcades and colonnades from the period between the 15th and 18th centuries that are otherwise not found in this area .

John the Baptist Church

The Church of St. John the Baptist ( Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste ), originally from the 12th century, is equipped with a unique stone tower in the shape of a grenade. The stepped altar , the tabernacle and three paintings (Baptism, Entombment and Resurrection of Christ) are under monument protection .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are 22 farms in the community (growing grain, raising cattle).

Beaumont is on the road from Stenay via Mouzon to Sedan , which mostly runs along the left bank of the Meuse . From Beaumont roads branch off to the west (to Le Chesne ) and south-west (to Vouziers ).
