Yoncq is a French commune with 101 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department of the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sedan and the municipality of Portes du Luxembourg .
geography
The municipality of Yoncq is located at about 230 meters above sea level in northern France, about 25 kilometers from the Belgian border. The nearest major cities are Sedan (17 kilometers) and Charleville-Mézières (35 kilometers away).
The 15.5 square kilometer municipal area in the east of the Ardennes department includes a section of the Yoncq valley. The 17 km long left Maas tributary Yoncq runs in a south-west-north-east direction in a narrow, up to 400 meters wide valley low. The village of Yoncq stretches along the right bank of the river, slightly elevated and flood-proof. In some places the river has dug up to 70 meters deep into the plateau between the Maas and Aisne . Above the flood plain there is arable land in a gently undulating landscape, the river slopes are mostly wooded, a large contiguous forest area is located in the north of the municipality. Here, at 302 meters, two kilometers northwest of the village center, the highest point of Yoncq is reached. In the south, the area of the municipality touches the 20 square kilometer Forêt de Belval .
The houses of the settlement, some of which are abandoned and dilapidated, are grouped along the two streets running parallel to the river, with the slightly elevated church of Saint-Rémi forming the core. To the north-east and south-west of the village center and on the opposite side of the river, there are farm buildings (stables, machine shops).
Neighboring municipalities of Yoncq are Autrecourt-et-Pourron in the north, Mouzon in the northeast, Beaumont-en-Argonne in the southeast and south, La Besace in the southwest and Raucourt-et-Flaba in the northwest.
history
Yoncq and the immediate vicinity were the scene of bitter battles in the Franco-German War ( battle near Beaumont ) and in World War I (including the Meuse-Argonne offensive ). In 1793 the parish name was still spelled Yonc .
