Napoléon had left Sedan at 8 o'clock to meet the Prussian king, whom he assumed to be in Donchery. Bismarck received Napoléon at the entrance to the village in a weaver's house on the thoroughfare. Assuming that the emperor intended to soften the surrender conditions, Bismarck refused to speak to the Prussian king in Vendresse until the deed of surrender was signed. At 10:30 a.m. Napoléon III. brought to the Château de Bellevue in Frenois . Here an hour later the surrender was signed in the presence of the two monarchs.
