The Maison Tisserand

The Maison du Tisserand (fr. House of the Weaver) is a house in Donchery in France, in which the historical encounter between Bismarck and Napoleon III. took place on September 2, 1870.

history

On September 2, 1870, after the Battle of Sedan , Napoléon III met in a weaver's house in Donchery . and Otto von Bismarck . Napoléon had left Sedan at 8 o'clock to meet the Prussian king, whom he assumed to be in Donchery. Bismarck, to whom the incident had been reported, received Napoléon at the entrance to the village. Together they went to a poor weaver's house on the thoroughfare not far from Donchery. Assuming that the emperor intended to soften the surrender conditions, Bismarck refused to speak to the Prussian king in Vendresse until the deed of surrender was signed. At 10:30 a.m. Napoléon III. brought to the Château de Bellevue in Frenois . Here an hour later the surrender was signed in the presence of the two monarchs.

Bismarck's description of the events

The room in the house

“I rode unwashed and without breakfast against Sedan and found the emperor in an open carriage with 3 adjutants and 3 on horseback next to him on the road in front of Sedan. I dismounted and greeted him as politely as I did in the Tuileries, and asked for his orders. He wished to see the king; I told him truthfully that SM has his quarters three miles away in the place where I am now writing. When N. asked where he should go, I offered him my quarters in Donchery, a small town on the Maß close to Sedan, since I had no knowledge of the area; he accepted it [...] At the place he was sorry because of the possible crowd, and he asked me if he could stay in a small workers' house on the road; I let Carl inspect it, who reported it was poor and unclean. N'importe meant N., and I climbed the usual narrow staircase with him. We sat for an hour in a ten-foot square, with a pine table and two cane chairs, the others were downstairs. A tremendous contrast to our last meeting, 67 in the Tuileries. Our conversation was difficult if I did not want to touch the things that must painfully touch the man who had been cast down by God's mighty hand. "
