geography

Bazeilles is four kilometers southeast of Sedan and 82 kilometers northeast of Reims on the northern edge of the Argonne , about 13 kilometers south of the border with Belgium . The Chiers flows south of the town center into the Meuse .

history

In 1793 Bazeilles received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) and in 1801 under the name Bazeille through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) the right to local self-government. The municipality had the fewest inhabitants (884) in 1800 and most (2048) in 1866.

Bazeilles was the scene of the battle for Bazeilles in the run-up to the Battle of Sedan in the summer of 1870 .

coat of arms

The upper left part of the coat of arms symbolizes the flames of the fire that raged in the community during the fighting in 1870. The anchor in the upper right part symbolizes the Blue Division of the French Marines (called Marsouins ), which defended Bazeilles to the last cartridge . The lower part shows the emblem of the Legion of Honor . This medal was awarded to the place on October 9, 1900 for the fact that the residents valiantly supported the battles mentioned above.

Culture and sights

Bazeilles is represented with three flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Buildings and parks

The park of Orival Castle, also called Bazeille Castle , dates back to the 18th century. It is privately owned and was classified as a Monument historique in 1943 . The castle itself was built between 1740 and 1750 on behalf of the wealthy manufacturer Louis Labauche in the Louis-quinze style. Louis Labauche was by Louis XV. (1710–1774) ennobled in 1769. Many famous people visited the castle, including Charles Alexandre de Calonne (1734–1802), Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852), Alexander I of Russia (1777–1825) and Wilhelm I (1797– 1888). The castle changed hands several times in the 20th century and was badly damaged in a fire in 1989.

Turenne Castle, also called Turenne Farm, was built in the 16th century and later named after Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne (1611–1675). It was badly damaged in 1870; practically only the fortified entrance gate, the gardens and parts of the property wall with loopholes have been preserved. In 1950 the preserved parts were entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques ( inscrit MH ).
