Bazeilles is a village and a former French commune with 1,911 (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the former municipalities of Bazeilles , Rubécourt-et-Lamécourt and Villers-Cernay were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Bazeilles of the same name and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Bazeilles.

history

Bazeiles after the battle of 1870

The site was the site of the Battle of Bazeilles in 1870 . Despite the victory of the German troops over France, the Bavarian units involved suffered heavy losses. The battle is considered to be one of the first modern house-to-house fights in history. Bazeilles was set on fire during the fighting by the Bavarians and largely destroyed.
