The Chiers ( Latterburgisch: Kuer , German: Korn ) is a river that has its source in Luxembourg , briefly touches Belgium , mostly runs through France and after about 140 kilometers flows into the Meuse as a right tributary south of Sedan . It is the only river in Luxembourg that does not belong to the catchment area of the Moselle .

geography

course

The Chiers rises under the name Korn near Oberkorn in the municipality of Differdingen (last castle: Déifferdeng, French: Differdange), then runs over Niederkorn to the west, after about 14 kilometers it leaves Luxembourg and first reaches at Athus , municipality of Aubange , Belgian territory. Then it flows first as a Luxembourg-Belgian and then as a Luxembourg-French border river to France. Here she reaches the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and crosses the conurbation of Longwy as Chiers . Then it forms a deeply incised valley below Longuyon that is sometimes very winding. At Torgny (municipality of Rouvroy ) it reaches the Meuse department and forms its border with Belgium for about three kilometers. A few kilometers west of it, it winds around Montmédy . Halfway between this city and the Maas valley, it turns north and flows, initially separated from it by a ridge, for about 20 kilometers parallel to it. In doing so, it reaches the Ardennes department at Margut . After passing the town of Carignan , it flows into the Meuse at the municipal boundary of Bazeilles and Remilly-Aillicourt , shortly before it reaches Sedan .
