Hermann Serges (* in the 15th century in Dorsten , North Rhine-Westphalia ; † 1523 in Erfurt ; also Serges de Dorsten or Hermann Serges de Dorsten ) was a German theologian .

Life

As a licentiate in theology and a member of the Collegium maius, Hermann Serges became rector of the University of Erfurt in the 1489 summer semester . On October 8, 1491 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and in 1513 he was the dean of his faculty. During this time he was particularly concerned with the controversy surrounding Johannes Reuchlin's book "Augenspiegel". In his report on this work, like the Cologne theologians before, he came to the conclusion that it should be censored , while at the same time giving "full appreciation for Reuchlin's erudition and literary merits". In November 1510 Serges became a canon with lecturer at the Marienkirche (today Erfurt Cathedral) and experienced the beginning of the Reformation during this time . His estate is in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar .

In the archive of the Dorsten Franciscan monastery there is a letter from Serges to the same monastery from 1522, where he is looking for a scholarship for two Dorsten students in Erfurt . A Dorsten student, Theodor Dorsten , lived with him during his studies in Erfurt.
