Mont-Saint-Martin (Luxembourgish: Mäertesbierg ; German Martinsberg ) is a French commune with 8807 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Briey and is chef lieu (capital) of the canton of Mont-Saint-Martin .

geography

Mont-Saint-Martin is the northernmost municipality in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. It is located on the border triangle of Luxembourg, Belgium and France at an altitude between 160 and 298 m above sea level. The municipality covers 8.84 km².

The district of Piedmont belongs to Mont-Saint-Martin .

Neighboring communities are Aubange (Belgium) in the west and north, Pétange (Luxembourg) in the east, Longlaville in the south-east, Longwy in the south and Cosnes-et-Romain in the south-west.

history

The earliest traces of settlement can be traced back to the third century. The place arose at the intersection of Roman roads that connected the camps of Titelberg and Virton . There was a church in the village since the sixth century. From 1793 to 1973 the place belonged to the canton Longwy .

Population development

The population development has been proven since the end of the 18th century. In 1793 there were only 230 inhabitants in Mont-Saint-Martin. In 1872 the number of inhabitants exceeded the limit of 1,000 for the first time. As early as 1896 there were over 2,400 residents in the village. The population rose to over 6,100 in 1931, only to drop below 4,300 by 1946. The highest number of inhabitants reached so far was 11,556 in 1975.
