Bréhain-la-Ville ( German  Bergheim and Luxemburgish Leit-Bierchem ) is a French commune with 412 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ).

geography

The municipality is located twelve kilometers southeast of Longwy and about eight kilometers south of the border with Luxembourg . The districts of Bréhain-la-Cour (Haff-Bierchem) belong to Bréhain-la-Ville . Neighboring municipalities are Tiercelet in the north, Villerupt in the northeast, Crusnes in the east, Errouville in the south, Fillières in the southwest, Morfontaine in the west and Villers-la-Montagne in the northwest. The A30 autoroute runs through the municipality .

history

The name is derived from the German word Bergheim (house on the mountain). The place was first mentioned in 1169 as Berchem (1341: Bergheim , 1400: Brehein la ville and 1793: Bréhain-la-cour or Haff-Bierchem). In 1524 the place came to France as Villers-la-Montagne . Under Louis XIV it was renamed Bréhain-la-cour (Haff-Bierchem). Since 1793 it has officially been given the French name Bréhain-la-Ville .

Pierre Lamotte was mayor from 2001 to 2008, and since then it has been Bernardino Pallotta.
