The canton of Villerupt is a French constituency in the arrondissement of Briey , in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and in the region of Grand Est (until 2015 Lorraine ); its main town is Villerupt .

The canton is located in the north of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
history
The canton was created on August 2, 1973 by splitting off from the canton Longwy . Until 2015, twelve municipalities belonged to the canton of Villerupt. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 14. Of the previous communes, 4 moved to the canton of Mont-Saint-Martin . In addition to the remaining 8 communes, 3 communes each from the previous cantons Audun-le-Roman and Herserange were added.

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton of Villerupt included the twelve municipalities of Baslieux , Bazailles , Boismont , Bréhain-la-Ville , Fillières , Laix , Morfontaine , Thil , Tiercelet , Ville-au-Montois , and Villers-la-Montagne and Villerupt (main town). Its layout corresponded to an area of 111.10 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 5437.

politics
In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the run-off election on March 29, 2015, the team Annie Silvestri (FG) / Alain Casoni (PCF) won against Martine Decailloz / Patrick Pinto (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 64.90% (turnout: 39.67%).
