Excavations in the area suggest a settlement in Gallo-Roman and Merovingian times. The first mention of the village under the Latin name Villa in Fataliago Comitatu Virdunensi dates back to 636.

The parish of Grand-Failly was established in 1790; its current expansion has existed since 1811, when the hamlet of Petit-Xivry was incorporated. During the First World War parts of the community were destroyed; Even during World War II, the area was fiercely contested. During the time of the Battle of the Bulge near Petit-Xivry, a provisional cemetery was set up for thousands of Allies and Germans. In 1985, a memorial was inaugurated at this point.
