geography

The municipality of Moulins-Saint-Hubert is about halfway between Sedan and Stenay , about 15 kilometers from the Belgian border. The municipality forms the north-westernmost tip of the Meuse département and all of Lorraine. It extends on a plateau sloping to the southwest between the Maas and Chiers floodplains . The rivers Ruisseau de Moulins (Mühlenbach) and Ruisseau de Saint-Rémy, which have their source in the municipality, drain to the Meuse. The higher elevations in the northeast are covered by forests ( Bois de Moulins ), arable land, pasture land and orchards dominate around the village.

Neighboring communities of Moulins-Saint-Hubert are Vaux-lès-Mouzon in the north, Malandry in the east (point of contact), Autréville-Saint-Lambert in the south and Mouzon in the west.

history

Finds from Gallo-Roman times showed that the area around Moulins-Saint-Hubert was already populated in the 1st century AD. This civilization lasted until the 4th century. After that, a village gradually developed, which is the starting point for today's municipality. In 1139 Moulins came into the possession of the Abbey of Saint-Hubert in what is now Belgium. The priory next to the church was built in the 10th century; it was referred to as cellam molins in a document from Pope Innocent II and forms the nucleus of the village. Agnes, the Countess of Chiny , donated part of the Blanchampagne forest to the priory in 1185 . The monastery church was donated by the monks in 1669. It was expanded in 1752. The Saint-Hubert church dates from the 11th century.

On the south-west sloping terraces in Moulins-Saint-Hubert, viticulture had a long tradition (43 hectares in the 19th century). The phylloxera crisis between 1865 and 1885 led to great devastation, and the First World War finally led to the abandonment of the vineyards in the entire wine-growing region on the Meuse. In the 19th century there were two breweries in the village.

The last of the mills that gave the place its name - the Priory Mill - was demolished in 1994 due to its dilapidation. She worked until the First World War. The economic activity is now reduced to a locksmith's shop, a metal construction company and a shipping company. Moulins still has 22 kindergarten children. After all, there is a motocross race every year.

Located between the great theaters of war Sedan and Verdun , Moulins-Saint-Hubert suffered severe damage during the First World War. This included the town hall and school building, which was rebuilt in 1928. Several monuments in the village commemorate the liberation by US troops on November 11, 1918.
