The 5.42 km² large municipal area extends on the edge of a high plateau in the foothills of the Ardennes at the mouth of the Thonne in the Meuse tributary Chiers .

The north-western half of the municipal area is determined by a forest area that extends to the border of the Ardennes department . An approximately 1000 m long, high embankment including a viaduct, which divides the village in half, is characteristic of the townscape. The village center with church and mairie is in the northern part.

Neighboring municipalities of Thonne-les-Près are Thonnelle in the north, Montmédy in the east, Vigneul-sous-Montmédy in the southwest and Chauvency-le-Château in the west.

history

According to the historian Jean-François Jeantin , the existence of the village of Thonne-les-Près cannot be proven before the 13th century.

The village has suffered from numerous military conflicts throughout its history, from the siege by French troops in 1657, which ended its affiliation to Luxembourg , to the Second World War. The parish was part of County Chiny from 1364 to 1657 .

The fortress builder Vauban built a citadel in neighboring Montmédy , which came to France after the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659.

In 1915, German troops set up an airfield between Thonne-les-Près and the banks of the Chiers . The school, the rectory and numerous other buildings were built during the Third Republic .

The Saint-Georges church burned down during the Franco-Prussian War . The reconstruction was carried out under the leadership of Baron de Benoist , the last lord of the castle of the Château de Thonne-les-Près .

The village was also occupied during the Second World War. In both world wars, the castle in Thonne-les-Près, which belonged to the Benoist family until the mid-1960s, was occupied and often looted. The municipality was part of the County of Chiny until 1364 , after which it was part of the Duchy of Luxembourg until 1657 .
