Marchéville-en-Woëvre is a French commune with 68 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015: Lorraine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Verdun , the canton of Étain (until 2015: canton Fresnes-en-Woëvre ) and the Territoire de Fresnes-en-Woëvre, founded in 1996 .

geography

The municipality is located around 23 kilometers southeast of Verdun in the Woëvre region . Marchéville-en-Woëvre is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Riaville in the north-west, Maizeray in the north-east, Harville in the east, Saint-Hilaire-en-Woëvre in the south-east and Saulx-lès-Champlon in the south-west.

history

The village is located on a former Gallo-Roman site. The name of the village Marchéville is derived from the word Marchia , which means border. There were three consecutive churches in Marchéville, the first of which was built in the 12th century. It was burned down in 1591 during the Huguenot Wars . The second church was badly damaged by the Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War in 1639 and destroyed in the First World War.
