life and work

Krzysztof Niemczyk was a self-taught artist and author . His parents were the musicians Wacław Niemczyk and Danuta Niemczyk, née von Schenk . In the 1990s he initiated polarizing actions in Krakow's public space , which were suppressed with unprecedented severity. He's been forgotten. He came back into public awareness when, on the initiative of Anka Ptaszkowska, a solo exhibition took place in the ART + on gallery in Warsaw in 2009 . In addition, the writings Kurtyzana i pisklęta / The courtesan and the chicks and A treatise on the life of Krzysztof Niemczyk by Krzysztof Niemczyk von Ptaszkowska were published in one volume.

Niemczyk was a colorful figure, homosexual and with an unusual way of life. He acted spontaneously and often illegally. The ubiquitous wooden bird on his shoulder, angel wings made of paper sewn into his clothing and intense, provocative make-up caused a sensation. As a primary school student, he is said to have come to school naked, only wrapped in a map of Poland. He turned his mother into a living statue by tying her to a bench in Planty Park in Krakow in front of the Bureau of Art Exhibitions . His actions were not recognized as art at the time.

Posthumously he was represented with an installation at documenta 14 .
