Roberto Di Donna (born September 8, 1968 in Rome ) is a former Italian sports shooter . In 1996 he was Olympic champion with the air pistol and Olympic knight with the free pistol .

Athletic career

Roberto Di Donna began shooting sports in 1982, and the following year he was fourth at the European Junior Championships with an air pistol. In 1986 he won the Junior European Championships, two years later he won silver. At the Olympic Games in 1988 , he took 23rd place with the free pistol. In 1991 Di Donna won the World Cup in Zurich with the air pistol, and he won a total of 19 World Cup events during his career, 12 victories with the air pistol and seven with the free pistol. There were also two victories at the World Cup finals with both the air pistol and the free pistol.

At the European Championships in 1991, Di Donna took fourth place at the European Championships with the air pistol. In 1992 at the Olympic Games in Barcelona he finished 22nd with the free pistol, with the air pistol he reached the final and finished eighth. In 1993 Di Donna won silver with the free pistol and bronze with the air pistol at the European Championships. In 1994 he received the bronze medal with the air pistol at the World Championships in Milan. At the European Championships in 1995, silver with the air pistol and bronze with the free pistol followed.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the competition with the air pistol first took place. After qualifying, the 1992 Chinese Olympic champion Wang Yifu was two points ahead of Roberto Di Donna and Poland's Jerzy Pietrzak . In the final, Di Donna scored the fourth best result. Since Wang Yifu achieved the weakest result of the eight finalists with a failed last shot, Di Donna won gold ahead of the Chinese and the Bulgarian Tanju Kirjakow . Three days later in the competition with the Free Pistole, after qualifying, the Russian Boris Kokorew led by one point ahead of the two Italians Roberto Di Donna and Virgilio Fait . In the final, Belarusian Ihar Bassinski managed the best series ahead of Kokorew, the two Italians shot the weakest series. In the end, Kokorew won gold ahead of Bassinski and Di Donna.

1997 Di Donna won silver with the air pistol at the European Championships. The following year he reached fifth place at the World Championships in Barcelona. In 1999 he won his first European title in Arnhem. In 2000 he was third at the European Championships. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, Roberto Di Donna reached the final twice and took sixth place with the air pistol and seventh place with the free pistol. In 2001 he won his second European title with the air pistol in Pontevedra. He was internationally active until 2010, but did not win an international medal after 2001.

Roberto Di Donna was with the Guardia di Finanza and started for their sports group Fiamme Gialle . His hometown club is TSN Verona .
