At the XXV. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , 13 sports shooting competitions were held. Seven disciplines were reserved for men and four for women, plus two open disciplines. The venue was the Camp de Tir Olímpic de Mollet in Mollet del Vallès .

For the first time, an electronic results display system was used. Each shooter had a monitor at his stand, which immediately after firing the shot displayed the result and the hit position on the target. The hit was recorded using an acoustic measuring system that was housed in the encapsulated bullet trap behind the target. By showing the shooters' monitors on television, it was possible for the first time to make the sport more transparent for the public and to bring it closer to a wider audience. Since the score of a shot is divided into tenths of a point in the finals, this, together with the technical innovations, ensured many position changes and exciting broadcasts.

With an Olympic record of 598 points, Bichler moved into the final as the leader, where he was still silver after the penultimate shot. The last round only resulted in a 9.8 for Bichler, so that at the end of the competition he was tied with third-placed Yugoslav Pletikosić. However, since the better final result is rated higher, this meant fourth place for Bichler.
