Launi Kay Meili (born June 4, 1963 in Spokane ) is a former American sports shooter .

successes

Launi Meili took part in two Olympic Games . In 1988 she took sixth place with the air rifle in Seoul, and seventh in the three-position battle with the small-bore rifle. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , she shot a new Olympic record in a three-position battle in qualification with 587 points. In the final she got another 97.3 points, so she won the gold medal with a total of 684.3 points, which was also an Olympic record, ahead of Nonka Matowa and Małgorzata Książkiewicz . The air rifle competition she finished in eleventh place.

At world championships she won four medals with the team: in 1990 in Moscow she became world champion with the air rifle, with the small bore rifle she secured bronze in the prone position and silver in the three-position fight. The following year she won bronze with the air rifle team in Stavanger . She was also very successful at the Pan American Games . In 1987 she won silver in the individual competition in Indianapolis both in the three-position fight with the small bore rifle and with the air rifle. Four years later she finished the individual competition with the air rifle again from the silver medal. Three gold medals followed in the team competitions: with the air rifle and with the small bore rifle in the prone position and in the three-position fight, Meili was part of the winning team.

After the Olympic Games in 1992, Meili ended her career and started working as a trainer. At the same time, she graduated from Eastern Washington University and then obtained a master's degree in sports psychology from the University of Idaho in 2001 . From 1997 to 2000 she was assistant coach for the US national team, after which she supervised the shooting teams at the University of Nebraska and the Air Force Academy . Meili is a member of the Hall of Fame for the International Shooting Sport Federation .
