Sorin Babii (born November 14, 1963 in Arad ) is a former Romanian sports shooter .

successes

Sorin Babii took part in six Olympic Games . In 1984 he took eleventh place with the Free Pistol in Los Angeles . At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , he moved into the final in this discipline, which he finished with a new Olympic record of 660 points in first place and thus became Olympic champion ahead of Ragnar Skanåker and Ihar Bassinski . He also reached the final with the air pistol, but missed another medal in fourth place. Four years later he qualified again for the final in Barcelona with the air pistol. Behind Wang Yifu and Sergei Pyschjanow he finished this with 684.1 points on the bronze rank. With the free pistol, he finished fifth. In 1996 in Atlanta he finished the competition with the air pistol in 26th place and with the free pistol in 20th place. At the Games in 2000 in Sydney he missed in eleventh with the air gun and ninth with the free pistol as well as the finals in 2004 in Athens , when he finished 18th in the air pistol to 13th place and with the free pistol. At world championships in 1989 in Suhl and in 1991 in Stavanger he won the bronze medal in the individual ranking with the air pistol. With the air pistol and the free pistol, he was single European champion.

After his playing career, he became a coach. Babii, Lieutenant Colonel of the Reserve, is married to Lucia Babii, who was the Romanian national champion in sport shooting. The two have three children. He received the Order For Merit in 2000 .
