Huelet Leo "Joe" Benner (born November 1, 1917 in Paragould , † December 12, 1999 in Tampa ) was an American sports shooter .

Huelet Benner took part in three Olympic Games . In 1948 he finished fourth in London with the free pistol over 50 m and thus just missed a medal win. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he did not get past 34th place with the rapid-fire pistol, while he achieved the best result of the competition with the free pistol with 553 points, with which he was Olympic champion before Ángel León and Ambrus Balogh . He finished the 1956 Games in Melbourne with the free pistol in eleventh place.

Benner secured a total of 17 medals at world championships . He became world champion in Buenos Aires in 1949 and in Oslo in 1952 with the rapid-fire pistol in the individual and in the team competition with the large-bore pistol. In 1952 he also won the title with the rapid-fire pistol with the team. Benner won his sixth world title in 1954 in Caracas with the free pistol in singles. Otherwise he won five silver and six bronze medals. At the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires in 1951 and in Mexico City in 1955 , Benner won the gold medal in singles with the rapid-fire pistol. In 1955 he won the title with the team, while he also won the silver medal in 1951 and the gold medal in 1955 with the free pistol.

Benner joined the US Army in 1935 and worked there as a weapon instructor. He resigned in 1964 with the rank of sergeant major .
